Integrating Montessori and Kumon Approaches for Holistic Early Childhood Learning.

At Golden Minds Prep, we love blending different teaching styles to give our children a well-rounded learning experience. One of our favorite examples is how we combine Montessori and Kumon-inspired methods when exploring a single concept, like counting to ten. Both approaches have their own strengths, and together they help children build understanding in a fun, balanced way.

Montessori | Hands-on Discovery
We start with a Montessori-style activity that allows children to feel and see numbers come to life. Using traditional materials such as Number Rods or Golden Beads, the teacher introduces counting in a very tactile way.

A small group of children gathers around a floor mat, where the teacher carefully demonstrates how the rods grow longer from one to ten. Each child then gets a chance to handle the rods, arrange them in order, and count out loud.

This simple activity gives children a real, sensory connection to numbers, they can touch them, compare them, and truly understand what “ten” feels like compared to “one.” It also encourages independence, as each child explores the material at their own pace, while naturally developing focus and fine motor coordination.

Part 2: Kumon | Structured Practice
After exploring the concept through play, children transition to a more structured Kumon-style activity to strengthen what they’ve learned.

Each child receives a worksheet filled with cheerful illustrations to count. At first, they might trace and write the number “1” beside a single apple or ball. As their confidence grows, the worksheets gradually introduce higher numbers and slightly more challenging tasks, such as connecting dots to form the correct number.

This stage helps children practice pencil control, recognize numbers symbolically, and build focus as they work through each page step-by-step. The gentle repetition reinforces their understanding while developing early academic discipline.

How These Methods Work Together
This combined approach moves children naturally from concrete to abstract learning, first experiencing numbers with their senses, then representing them on paper. It also strikes a beautiful balance between playful discovery and structured practice.
